You are sitting in a Limassol bank branch with a lease, a passport and a job offer. The clerk asks for your tax identification code. You have a UK National Insurance number and a Self Assessment reference, and neither is what they want. You leave with a list of documents and a new appointment.
That scene is common. This guide explains what the number is and how you get it. It also covers the point most guides skip: holding the number says nothing about where you are tax resident.
What the Cyprus tax number actually is
A Cyprus tax identification number is a reference the Cyprus Tax Department gives each taxpayer. Individuals receive a Tax Identification Code, usually shortened to TIC. People search for it as a tax number Cyprus, a Cyprus tax number or a tax identification code Cyprus. All of these refer to the same record.
The number identifies you to the Tax Department. Employers use it for payroll. Banks use it to meet their reporting duties. Landlords and agents ask for it when a lease or a property purchase is involved. The department describes the number on the Cyprus Tax Department site.
What it is not
A TIN is a registration. It is not a residence permit, and it is not proof of tax residency. You can hold a Cyprus number while being tax resident in the UK, in Cyprus, or in neither. Your TIN is one of the first pieces of paper you collect. Your residency is a separate question, and it depends on how you spend your days.
Number first, status second
Readers usually ask about four things, in this order: residency, tax status, healthcare access and where to live. The tax number sits in the middle of that list because several other steps depend on it.
Cyprus has two tests for tax residency. The first is 183 days in Cyprus in a tax year. The second is the 60-day rule. It applies if you do not spend 183 days or more in any other single country, you have a business, employment or directorship in Cyprus, and you keep a permanent home there. The Cyprus non-dom guide covers that rule and its catches in full.
Both tests count days and facts. Neither asks whether you hold a number. Two people can hold identical codes and have different tax positions. The reverse also happens: someone can become tax resident in Cyprus on day counts before the paperwork catches up.
A worked example: the arrival order
Take a UK freelancer who lands in March, rents a flat and plans to work for UK clients from it. Here is where the number fits in their decisions.
1. Lease and bank. The landlord wants a tax number, and so does the bank. The freelancer needs it within the first few weeks, so it goes near the top of the list. 2. Day count. From the day they arrive, the freelancer records days in Cyprus and days elsewhere. This record decides residency later, and no office keeps it for them. 3. Status. Only after a few months does the question of which test applies become concrete. The number plays no part in it. 4. Home country. HMRC does not stop treating someone as UK resident because they registered abroad. The UK applies its own tests. The UK-Cyprus treaty section of our UK guide explains why both countries can ask the same question.
The rule of thumb is simple. Register for the number when something concrete needs it, such as a lease, payroll or a bank account. Work out your tax residency from your calendar, not from your paperwork. Mixing the two up causes most of the confusion readers describe to us.
How you get one
You register through the Tax Department and its online portal, Tax For All, at tfa.gov.cy. Employees often get the number through their employer. Self-employed people and newcomers who are not on a payroll register with the department themselves.
Official processes in Cyprus involve a lot of paper and a lot of in-person visits. Expect appointments, certified copies and some waiting. Bring your passport and proof of address, and ask the district office which documents it wants certified. Offices differ in what they accept, so check the list with the one you plan to visit before you go.
If you are employed or running a company
An employer registers you for payroll and social insurance, and the number arrives through that process. If you form a company, the company gets its own tax record. As a director you also keep a personal record, so you deal with the department in two capacities. Our home page guides cover the tax rules for company owners who move.
Your UK reference does not replace it
Your UK Unique Taxpayer Reference and National Insurance number stay with HMRC. They do not convert into a Cyprus code. Readers moving from the UK keep both. The UK reference covers UK income, and the Cyprus code covers anything handled by Cypriot institutions.
EU member states also use tax identification numbers in cross-border reporting. The European Commission publishes a TIN portal that explains how each country structures and validates its numbers. Cyprus is an EU member, so that reporting framework applies to you once you hold a number here.
Mistakes that cost a second appointment
- Bringing an uncertified copy when the office wanted a certified one.
- Treating the number as proof of residency when a bank or employer asks for a residency certificate. The Tax Department issues that certificate on request, and it rests on your days and facts.
- Forgetting to tell UK institutions what has changed. A number abroad does not update your UK records.
- Relying on a blog post. Rules and thresholds change, and much of the guidance online is out of date. Check with the relevant ministry or a licensed adviser before acting. Our cost of living guide shows what the first months cost while you wait for appointments.

Common questions
What is a tax identification number in Cyprus?
It is a reference issued by the Cyprus Tax Department that identifies you as a taxpayer. For individuals it is called the Tax Identification Code. Banks, employers and landlords ask for it.
Does having a Cyprus tax number make me a Cyprus tax resident?
No. Residency depends on the 183-day test or the 60-day rule, which count days and facts. A number is only a registration. You can hold one and still be tax resident elsewhere.
Is a tax identification code in Cyprus the same as a tax number?
Yes. Tax identification code, TIC, tax number and TIN all describe the same reference issued by the Tax Department. People use different terms for it.
Can I use my UK UTR or National Insurance number in Cyprus?
No. Those references belong to HMRC and do not convert into a Cyprus code. Keep both. Use the UK reference for UK income and the Cyprus code for Cypriot institutions.
Where do I apply for a Cyprus tax number?
Through the Tax Department, either at a district office or via the Tax For All portal. Employees often get one through their employer. Confirm the document list with your local office first.
