Why German movers pick Cyprus

Germans are one of the fastest-growing relocation groups in Cyprus, driven by tax pressure at home and the simplicity of an EU-internal move: no visa, no permit lottery, just registration (the yellow slip) after arrival. A large German-speaking community and German-speaking advisers already exist in Limassol and Paphos.

Not advice. This page is general information, written by people who made this move and not by licensed advisers. It is not tax, legal, accounting or immigration advice, figures change without notice, and errors are possible. Confirm anything you intend to act on with a licensed professional in Cyprus and in your current country before you commit. Full disclaimer.

The tax comparison in plain numbers

The comparison that drives the move: German dividends and capital income face the ~26.4% Abgeltungsteuer (including solidarity surcharge), and top income tax reaches 45% plus surcharges. A Cyprus non-dom pays 0% on dividends and interest for 17 years, plus the capped 2.65% GHS contribution. Corporate profits: Germany's combined corporate burden runs around 30%, Cyprus charges 15% from 2026.

The full mechanics of the Cyprus side, including the 60-day residency rule and the GHS cap, are in the non-dom guide, and the running costs of the company most people pair with it are in the company cost guide.

Leaving Germany: what to check before you go

The big German trap is the Wegzugsbesteuerung (exit tax): leave Germany holding 1% or more of a company (including your own GmbH) and Germany taxes the unrealised gain as if you sold on departure, with tightened rules since 2022 even for EU moves. There are structuring options, but they must be arranged before you deregister, not after. The extended limited tax liability can also follow significant German income for years. This is the one move on this site where pre-departure advice is non-negotiable.

Home-country rates and exit rules above are indicative and change often. The Cyprus side of this page follows the 2026 reform; the German side needs confirming with a German adviser for your specific year of departure.

The practical side

As an EU citizen you can arrive, then register for the yellow slip within four months. Direct flights connect Larnaca and Paphos with most major German cities. An EU car can come in free of duty and VAT under transfer-of-residence relief, though the conditions are strict and worth confirming with Customs first (see the car guide), and it will be left-hand drive on left-driving roads, which many Germans accept and some regret.

Choosing where to land matters as much as the tax: see where to live in Cyprus, and if wheels are part of the plan, buying or importing a car.
