Why Canadians look at Cyprus
Unlike their American neighbours, Canadians can actually leave: Canada taxes residents, not citizens. Cut residency properly and Canadian tax largely stops following you. With combined federal-provincial top rates above 53% in several provinces, dividends from your own corporation taxed at high effective rates, and capital gains inclusion under continual political pressure, a growing number of Canadian founders, consultants and retirees are doing the math on a Mediterranean exit.
The tax comparison in plain numbers
A high-earning Canadian faces roughly 45-54% marginal tax depending on province, with dividends from a private corporation typically landing in the high 30s to mid 40s percent all-in after the integration mechanics. A Cyprus non-dom pays 0% on dividends and interest for 17 years plus the capped 2.65% GHS contribution; gains on securities are 0%; there is no wealth or inheritance tax. The Cyprus mechanics are in the non-dom guide and the company running costs in the company cost guide.
Leaving Canada: the two things that decide everything
The departure tax
When you cease Canadian residency, the CRA treats most of your property — including shares of your own corporation and investment portfolios — as sold at fair market value the day you leave, and taxes the deemed gain. Principal residences, RRSPs and some other assets are excluded, and you can elect to defer payment with security posted. This is the Canadian equivalent of an exit tax and it needs planning before your departure year, not in it.
Severing residential ties
Residency is a facts test. Keep a Canadian home available to you, a spouse or dependants in Canada, provincial health coverage, or a web of secondary ties, and the CRA can keep treating you as resident regardless of your Cyprus paperwork. The Canada-Cyprus tax treaty's tie-breaker helps a genuinely moved person, not a half-moved one.
Getting the right to live here
Canadians are non-EU, so you need a route: employment through a Cyprus company (including your own under the foreign-interest scheme), permanent residency via qualifying property investment, the digital nomad visa, or the passive-income visitor permit. Timelines and documents are on the residency permits page — start apostilles and record checks while still in Canada.
The practical side
No direct flights; connect via London or a European hub. Cyprus drives on the left and non-EU car imports carry duty and VAT, so most Canadians sell before flying and buy locally — see the car guide. Winters are what Canadians think summers are; see where to live and what it costs.
