Leaving Germany: what to check before you go
The big German trap is the Wegzugsbesteuerung (exit tax): leave Germany holding 1% or more of a company (including your own GmbH) and Germany taxes the unrealised gain as if you sold on departure, with tightened rules since 2022 even for EU moves. There are structuring options, but they must be arranged before you deregister, not after. The extended limited tax liability can also follow significant German income for years. As an EU citizen you can arrive, then register for the yellow slip within four months. Direct flights connect Larnaca and Paphos with most major German cities.
